Life Skills

In life skills class we learn and practice functional academic skills.
  • In reading and writing, we focus on being able to read independently, answer comprehension questions, read informal tasks to complete activities, and practice functional writing (resume building, personal information practice, writing legibly).
  • In math, we focus on real-world math problems, handling and counting money, preparing grocery lists for independent purchasing, and how math affects everyday life.
  • Furthermore, we also explore potential jobs and careers, study proper hygiene methods, run a weekly coffee shop/cart for all BMS staff members, and prepare students for post-secondary life and living on their own. Most of the activities we complete revolve around student independence, preparing food safely, using the kitchen and utensils safely, practicing community and self-awareness, and emotional regulation.
